Researchers from the University of Ottawa, The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, and The Ottawa Hospital have implemented and evaluated the safety of a same-day discharge program for minimally-invasive pulmonary resection. The study aimed to optimize hospital resources by increasing the number of patients discharged on the day of their procedure and measure outcomes to ensure safety.<br /><br />The study utilized a multidisciplinary approach and strict patient selection criteria. The patients were provided with virtual postoperative recovery support to enhance safety and care. Patient-reported outcomes were measured throughout the early recovery period.<br /><br />The results of the study showed that same-day discharge after minimally-invasive wedge resection was safe and not associated with readmissions. The same-day discharge group had a similar rate of emergency department visits compared to patients who were admitted. Complication rates were lower in the same-day discharge group, and patient satisfaction remained high.<br /><br />The study also highlighted the importance of virtual care outreach after surgery to prevent unplanned emergency visits and provide counseling that is typically provided by inpatient nursing staff. The researchers emphasized the need for ongoing enrollment and patient advocates to advise on protocol improvements.<br /><br />The implementation of a same-day discharge program for minimally-invasive pulmonary resection has the potential to optimize hospital resources and improve patient outcomes. The findings of this study contribute to the growing body of evidence supporting enhanced recovery and fast-track protocols in lung resection procedures.
