Pdf Summary
This study aims to identify predictors of poor quality of life (QOL) following lung resection for stage I-IIIa Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). The study is a prospective observational cohort study conducted at a single institution. QOL was assessed using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QLQ-C30 and Lung cancer module LC29 tools at various time points postoperatively.

Preliminary findings suggest that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common factor associated with poor QOL recovery in multiple domains. Worse forced vital capacity (FVC) values were found to correlate better with QOL outcomes compared to forced expiratory volume (FEV1). The study also found that the physical QOL domain was negatively impacted by advanced tumor staging (Stage I vs I-IIIa) and factors such as OSA, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (DLCO), and FVC.

In terms of cognitive QOL recovery, OSA was found to have a statistically significant impact. Additionally, poor FEV1 and FVC values were associated with worse cognitive QOL recovery.

The study included 120 participants, with 69% being female. The majority of procedures (62%) were performed via video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), with 55% being lobectomies. OSA was the only statistically significant variable that influenced the global QOL domain.

The findings from this study suggest that OSA and lung function, specifically FVC, play significant roles in predicting poor QOL outcomes following lung resection. These predictors could be valuable in informing patients about their expected recovery and aiding in treatment planning. Further analysis using multivariable regression is ongoing, and more comprehensive results will be reported in the future.
