Pdf Summary
This study aimed to investigate the association between preoperative respiratory function and postoperative complications, recurrence-free survival (RFS), and overall survival (OS) in patients undergoing pulmonary resection for stage IA non-small cell lung cancer. The study analyzed data from 192 patients at the Iwakuni Clinical Center in Japan between 2012 and 2015. The results showed that obstructive ventilatory impairment was present in 28.6% of patients, while restrictive ventilatory impairment was present in 16.1% and mixed ventilatory impairment in 3.6% of patients.

The study found that obstructive ventilatory impairment did not significantly affect the 5-year RFS or OS. However, restrictive ventilatory impairment was associated with a reduction in both 5-year RFS and OS. The rates of early and late complications were not significantly different based on the preoperative respiratory function.

The findings suggest that in patients with preoperative restrictive ventilatory impairment, who are unable to undergo lobectomy, careful consideration is needed for surgical indications. These results highlight the importance of preoperative respiratory assessment in determining the choice of surgical procedure for patients with stage IA non-small cell lung cancer.

Keywords for this study include ventilatory impairment, stage IA non-small cell lung cancer, and postoperative prognosis.

Overall, this study provides important insights into the impact of preoperative respiratory function on postoperative outcomes in patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer.
