Pdf Summary
This abstract discusses a study on the recurrence patterns and prognostic factors for relapse in operated lung cancers. The standard treatment for early-stage lung cancer is surgical resection, but recurrences after surgery are a major cause of decreased life expectancy and mortality. The study aimed to determine the recurrence patterns and prognostic factors influencing survival in patients with recurrences. The researchers evaluated the long-term results of patients who underwent surgery for lung cancer between 2010 and 2015. The cases were divided into three groups based on the first detected region of recurrence: loco-regional recurrence, systemic recurrence, or combined recurrence. Out of 783 cases, recurrence was detected in 326 cases during the follow-up period, and 232 of these relapsed cases died. The overall survival was significantly different between groups with and without relapse, with a 5 times higher risk of death in cases with relapse. Loco-regional recurrence was observed in more than half of the cases with recurrences, and the most common local recurrence sites were the anastomosis line in the ipsilateral lung and hilar-mediastinal LAM. Systemic recurrence was observed in 33.7% of cases, with brain metastasis being the most common area of distant metastasis. The study identified several predictive factors affecting overall survival, including male gender, advanced age, pericardial resection, and the presence of N2-3. In conclusion, the study provides insights into the recurrence patterns and factors influencing survival in operated non-small cell lung cancer cases. Loco-regional recurrence was the most common pattern, and brain metastasis was the most common distant metastasis. Independent predictive factors affecting overall survival were identified as male gender, advanced age, pericardial resection, and the presence of N2-3.
