Pdf Summary
This study evaluated the use of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) for the treatment of patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who were unable to undergo surgery. The study included 32 patients with stage I NSCLC and peripheral tumors, who received SBRT and were followed up from January 2015 to November 2021. The primary endpoint of the study was Progression Free Survival (PFS), while the secondary endpoints included Overall Survival (OS) and toxicity.

The results showed that the median PFS was 29 months, with PFS rates at 2 years and 3 years of 59.8% and 42.3%, respectively. The median OS was 59 months, with OS rates at 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, 4 years, and 5 years of 96.8%, 88.6%, 84.2%, 63.1%, and 42.1%, respectively. Patients who achieved disease control according to PERCIST 1.0 criteria had a reduced risk of death. The study also found that the median PFS was longer in patients with a maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) below 5.

The common adverse event observed was pneumonitis, but it was mainly grade 1 and grade 2, with no grade 4 or grade 5 pneumonitis reported. There were no clinically significant changes in pulmonary function following SBRT.

In conclusion, SBRT was found to be a good treatment option for patients with early-stage NSCLC who were not eligible for surgery. The study identified several predictors of patient survival, including the SUVmax value before treatment, the disease control rate at 3 months after SBRT according to PERCIST 1.0 criteria, and the levels of Cyfra 21-1 before and after treatment. Additionally, the study found that SBRT was a safe method for these patients.
