This study explored the impact of comorbidities on exercise levels in early-stage lung cancer patients after treatment. The study included patients with Stage I non-small cell lung cancer who underwent surgery or stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) at Mount Sinai between 2016 and 2023. The exercise levels of the patients were measured using the Godin Shephard Leisure-Time Activity Questionnaire at baseline, 1, 6, and 12 months after treatment. The presence of comorbidities such as COPD, diabetes, cardiac disease, and vascular disease was considered.<br /><br />The results showed that patients with comorbidities had lower exercise levels compared to those without comorbidities. Specifically, patients with COPD had significantly lower exercise scores at baseline. However, COPD patients showed an encouraging increase in exercise levels by the end of the first year post-treatment, especially among surgical patients. Similar patterns were observed in patients with diabetes, cardiac disease, and vascular disease.<br /><br />Interestingly, SBRT patients consistently had lower exercise levels compared to surgical patients at all time points. SBRT patients also had a slower recovery trajectory in terms of exercise levels compared to surgical patients.<br /><br />Overall, the findings highlight the importance of personalized rehabilitation strategies for early-stage lung cancer patients after treatment. Tailoring exercise interventions according to the patient's treatment type and comorbidities may optimize recovery and overall well-being. Future longitudinal studies are needed to further evaluate the long-term impacts of such tailored interventions on lung cancer survivors.
