Pdf Summary
This study aimed to identify the risk factors for postoperative home oxygen therapy (HOT) in primary lung cancer patients. The researchers analyzed the medical records of patients who underwent lung resection for primary lung cancer between January 2019 and March 2021. Patients who did not undergo complete resection, died postoperatively, or used oxygen therapy before surgery were excluded.

Out of the 410 patients included in the study, 24 (5.9%) required HOT after surgery. The HOT group had significantly more males, heavy smokers, pulmonary comorbidities, and postoperative pulmonary complications. They also had lower respiratory functions. In a multivariate analysis, the independent risk factors for postoperative HOT were pulmonary comorbidities and postoperative pulmonary complications.

The major pulmonary comorbidities in this cohort were interstitial lung disease and chronic obstructive lung disease, while the most common postoperative pulmonary complications were pneumonia and prolonged air leakage. Based on these findings, the researchers created a formula to calculate the predicted postoperative HOT application rate in lung cancer patients with or without each pulmonary comorbidity and each postoperative pulmonary complication.

The study concluded that comorbid pulmonary diseases and the development of postoperative pulmonary complications were significant risks for postoperative HOT in lung cancer patients. The researchers suggested that careful consideration of surgical indications and adequate postoperative management may help avoid the need for HOT administration after surgery.

In summary, this study identified the risk factors for postoperative HOT in primary lung cancer patients and emphasized the importance of considering these factors in surgical decision-making and postoperative care.
