Pdf Summary
This study aimed to identify risk factors for requiring home oxygen therapy (HOT) in patients with primary lung cancer after lung resection. The researchers retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients who underwent lung resection for primary lung cancer at their institution between January 2019 and March 2021. Patients who did not undergo complete resection, died postoperatively in the hospital, or received oxygen therapy before surgery were excluded. The eligible patients were divided into a home oxygen therapy group and a non-home oxygen therapy group and analyzed for risk factors for postoperative home oxygen therapy.

The results showed that pulmonary comorbidities such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and interstitial lung disease (ILD), as well as the development of postoperative pulmonary complications such as pneumonia and prolonged air leakage, were identified as risk factors for postoperative home oxygen therapy. A combination of these factors led to a high rate of postoperative home oxygen therapy administration. The researchers developed a formula for calculating the probability of requiring home oxygen therapy based on these risk factors.

This study highlights the importance of considering pulmonary comorbidities and postoperative complications in the management of lung cancer patients undergoing lung resection. Clinicians can use this information to plan treatment and obtain informed consent from high-risk patients. Further research is needed to validate the findings and determine the optimal management strategies for patients at risk of postoperative home oxygen therapy.
