Pdf Summary
This study analyzed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the diagnosis and surgical outcomes of lung cancer in a tertiary center in Korea. The researchers compared data from two groups of patients: the pre-pandemic group, with lung cancer diagnoses between March 2019 and February 2020, and the pandemic group, with diagnoses between March 2020 and February 2021.

The analysis found no significant difference in the number of lung cancer surgical cases between the two groups. The time interval between the first outpatient visit and surgery was slightly shorter in the pandemic group. Most patients in both groups did not show symptoms specific to lung cancer at the time of diagnosis. Age, sex, clinical and pathological stage, type of surgery, and complications and mortality rates were similar in both groups.

Therefore, the researchers concluded that the COVID-19 pandemic did not significantly affect the diagnosis and surgical outcomes of lung cancer in this tertiary center in Korea. Patients received timely surgical intervention despite the challenges posed by the pandemic. The findings suggest that healthcare systems can continue to provide essential cancer care during the pandemic with appropriate infection control measures. However, further studies are needed to assess the long-term impact of the pandemic on lung cancer care and outcomes.

Overall, this study indicates that the COVID-19 pandemic did not have a major impact on the diagnosis and surgical outcomes of lung cancer in this Korean center. Healthcare systems can adapt and continue to provide essential care for lung cancer patients even during a pandemic.
