Pdf Summary
This study aimed to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the diagnosis and surgical outcomes of lung cancer at a tertiary center in Korea. A retrospective study was conducted using a prospectively maintained database, comparing lung cancer surgeries before and during the pandemic. A total of 2,415 consecutive patients without a history of previous malignancy underwent pulmonary resection for lung cancer with curative intent between March 2019 and February 2021.

The study found no notable differences in the number of lung cancer surgical cases before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The interval between the first visit to the outpatient clinic and the date of surgery was slightly shorter during the pandemic. Most patients did not present with any lung cancer-specific symptoms at the time of diagnosis.

Surgical outcomes, including surgical extent, length of hospital stay, pulmonary complications, and 30-day mortality rates, did not significantly differ between the two groups. There were no significant differences in pathological stage, type of surgery, postoperative pulmonary complications, or 30-day mortality rates between the two groups.

The study concluded that the COVID-19 pandemic did not significantly affect the diagnosis and surgical outcomes of lung cancer in a tertiary center in Korea. The results suggest that lung cancer patients received timely surgical intervention during the pandemic, despite the challenges posed by COVID-19. The findings also suggest that healthcare systems can continue to provide essential cancer care during the pandemic with appropriate infection control measures. However, further studies are needed to evaluate the long-term impact of the pandemic on lung cancer care and outcomes.
