Pdf Summary
This study aimed to compare the long-term survival outcomes of patients with locally advanced lung cancer who underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) versus thoracotomy. The study included 117 patients with stage II/III lung cancer, with 62 undergoing VATS and 55 undergoing thoracotomy. The median follow-up time was 50 months.

The results showed that the overall survival (OS) rate of the VATS group was higher than that of the thoracotomy group at one year, three years, and five years after surgery. However, there was no significant difference in the 5-year OS between the two groups. The disease-free survival (DFS) rate of the VATS group was also higher than that of the thoracotomy group at one year and three years after surgery, but there was no significant difference at five years. There was no significant difference in the 5-year DFS between the two groups.

Based on these findings, the study suggests that VATS can achieve a similar prognosis as thoracotomy for locally advanced lung cancer. However, when selecting the surgical approach, in addition to traditional prognostic indicators such as OS and DFS, patient-reported outcomes that reflect the postoperative recovery process should be considered.

Overall, this study provides insights into the long-term survival outcomes of patients with locally advanced lung cancer who undergo different surgical approaches.
