A study was conducted to assess the response of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with chemoradiotherapy and neoadjuvant chemotherapy using FDG PET scans. The study aimed to evaluate the size and maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) of NSCLC tumors to determine the best treatment modality.<br /><br />The retrospective study included 27 stage III NSCLC patients, with 22 adenocarcinoma (AC) and 5 squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) patients. The patients were divided into different treatment groups, including neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy (NACT+CCRT), neoadjuvant chemotherapy alone (NACT), and neoadjuvant chemotherapy for SCC patients. FDG PET scans were performed before treatment and three weeks after treatment completion to assess tumor size and metabolic activity.<br /><br />The results showed that patients who received NACT+CCRT had a significant reduction in tumor size and SUVmax post-treatment. Patients who received NACT alone or SCC patients who received NACT also showed a decrease in tumor size and SUVmax post-treatment.<br /><br />The study also compared the response to treatment based on smoking history and found no association between smoking and response to treatment on PET scans.<br /><br />The study concludes that NACT+CCRT is effective in controlling tumor size and metabolic activity in AC patients, while SCC patients who received only NACT also responded well. There was no association between smoking and treatment response on PET scans.<br /><br />However, the study suggests that a prospective trial is needed to validate these findings and explore new radiotherapy techniques and neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy in NSCLC.
