Pdf Summary
A study conducted at the Medical University of Gdansk in Poland examined the use of trimodality treatment for superior sulcus non-small cell lung cancer (SST). This treatment approach involves concurrent chemoradiation followed by surgery. The study included 47 consecutive patients who underwent this treatment protocol between 2006 and 2018.

The results showed that the treatment was well tolerated, with no toxicity-related deaths. Grade 3-4 side effects were observed in 44% of patients, with neutropenia being the most common. Postoperative complications occurred in 36.2% of patients, and the 90-day mortality rate was 2.1%.

The median follow-up period was 64.7 months. The 3-year and 5-year overall survival rates were 43.6% and 33.5%, respectively. The recurrence-free survival rates at 3 years and 5 years were 42.1% and 32.4%, respectively. Patients who achieved a complete tumor regression had a 5-year overall survival rate of 52.7%.

Certain factors were found to be associated with better survival outcomes, including younger age, radical resection, complete pathological response, and lower Junker scale score.

In conclusion, the study suggests that trimodality treatment for SST is a relatively safe approach with satisfactory outcomes. It provides important clinical evidence for the use of concurrent chemoradiation followed by surgery in the treatment of this rare form of lung cancer.
