Pdf Summary
A recent study evaluated the outcomes of surgical treatment for stage IV non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in a population-based cohort. The study found that curative-intent resection was associated with better overall survival than expected for metastatic NSCLC, highlighting the importance of identifying patients with oligo-metastatic disease who could benefit from aggressive treatment.

Metastatic NSCLC is typically considered incurable, with low survival rates. However, patients with oligo-metastatic disease may benefit from surgical resection aimed at curing the cancer. The study analyzed patients in a population-based cohort and compared their overall survival with that of patients who underwent resections for earlier stages of NSCLC.

The study found that the five-year overall survival rate for stage I-III NSCLC was 61%, with a median overall survival of 8.3 years. In contrast, the five-year overall survival rate for stage IV NSCLC was 45%, with a median overall survival of 4 years. This indicates that surgical resection for stage IV NSCLC led to significantly better overall survival than expected.

The study also looked at the site of metastatic disease and found that the five-year overall survival rates varied depending on the site. For example, the five-year overall survival rate was 29% for hepatic metastasis and 67% for soft tissue metastasis.

The researchers call for prospective studies to standardize the selection of patients with oligo-metastatic disease and determine the optimal treatment approach for them. In conclusion, the study demonstrates the potential benefit of curative-intent surgical resection for select patients with stage IV NSCLC, underscoring the need for careful identification and appropriate treatment of patients with oligo-metastatic disease.
