This study aimed to compare the outcomes of patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (aNSCLC) who received first-line treatment with immunotherapy (IO) alone or in combination with chemotherapy (IOchemo) in real-world practice. The study utilized data from three major medical institutes in South Korea, representing a national coverage of 15-20% of all annual incident cases of NSCLC. The study included patients diagnosed with aNSCLC between January 2014 and December 2019, with follow-up until March 2020.<br /><br />The baseline characteristics of the patients differed between the IO and IOchemo cohorts, including histology and programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression levels. However, the real-world outcomes, such as overall survival, time to treatment discontinuation, and time to next treatment, were comparable between the two treatment groups.<br /><br />These findings suggest that there may not be a significant difference in outcomes between IO alone and IOchemo as first-line treatment for aNSCLC, despite the differences in patient characteristics. However, further investigation is needed to increase the level of evidence and explore potential interactions with key prognostic factors.<br /><br />The study was part of the EXPLORE-LC program, coordinated by IQVIA Solutions Asia Pte Ltd. and IQVIA Solutions Korea Ltd., and sponsored by IQVIA. The study utilized a retrospective observational design and data extracted from electronic medical records (EMR) using a specific common data standard. Overall, this study contributes to the understanding of real-world outcomes in aNSCLC patients receiving first-line immunotherapy.
