Pdf Summary
This study aimed to evaluate the impact of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) on the effectiveness of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (mNSCLC). The study included 109 mNSCLC patients treated with ICIs at a community cancer center. Patients exposed to PPIs within 30 days of ICI initiation were compared to unexposed patients in terms of progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and best overall response (OR). The analysis was conducted for patients receiving ICIs as first-line therapy and those receiving ICIs in subsequent lines of therapy. The median age of the patients was 63 years, with a diverse racial distribution. PD-L1 expression was observed in a subset of patients. In the primary analysis group, there was no significant difference in PFS between the PPI-exposed and unexposed groups. Similar results were seen in the secondary analysis group. However, OS was significantly longer in the PPI-exposed group in both the primary and secondary analysis groups. The study concluded that there is insufficient evidence to determine the impact of PPIs on treatment outcomes in mNSCLC. The retrospective nature of the study limited the assessment of PPI use. Further studies are needed to evaluate the impact of adjunctive chemotherapy and the choice of ICI on treatment outcomes. These findings contribute to the existing research by quantifying the impact of PPIs on survival outcomes in a real-world setting.
