EP14.01. Forced Vital Capacity Is a Strong Predictor for Postoperative Survival of Patients with Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma - PDF(Abstract)

This research study aimed to find an objective index for assessing the degree of tumor progression and indications for surgery in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), a type of cancer that affects the lining of the lungs. The researchers retrospectively evaluated data from 79 MPM patients who underwent surgery at their institution between 1999 and 2022. <br /><br />The results showed that forced vital capacity (FVC), a measure of lung function, is a strong predictor of postoperative survival in MPM patients, independent of imaging findings. The study found that patients with a percent predicted FVC of less than 80% had a significantly poorer prognosis after surgery compared to those with a FVC of 80% or higher. Other poor prognostic factors identified in the study include a rindlike growth pattern on computed tomography, a Glasgow Prognostic Score of 1, and a pathologic stage II.<br /><br />The researchers concluded that FVC can be a useful tool in assessing tumor invasion and determining indications for surgery in MPM patients. By considering FVC, doctors can better determine which patients would benefit from surgery and have a higher chance of postoperative survival.<br /><br />This study provides valuable insights into predicting postoperative survival in MPM patients.
