A study was conducted to identify biomarkers associated with the outcomes of patients with pleural mesothelioma (PM) who were treated with intracavitary cisplatin-fibrin. The study aimed to find potential prognostic factors that could be used in patient selection for future treatments. The researchers selected the markers p21 and Ki-67, which are known to be associated with resistance and response to cisplatin in mesothelioma. Digital analysis and quantification were performed using the QuPath software, and statistical analysis was conducted to determine the association between marker expressions and clinical parameters such as progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). The results showed that a low Ki-67 positive index (PI) in both the tumor and stromal compartments was significantly associated with better survival outcomes in patients receiving localized cisplatin-fibrin. Additionally, a reduction in Ki-67 index after chemotherapy was observed in some patients. The study concluded that Ki-67 PI may be a useful tool for selecting patients for this treatment regimen. Further investigation is needed to determine if the change in Ki-67 is associated with treatment response. The researchers also plan to assess Ki-67 PI in more tissues collected at diagnosis to confirm its association with survival before therapy. The study was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
