Pdf Summary
This document discusses the importance of palliative care for patients diagnosed with lung cancer. Palliative care focuses on improving the lives of patients and their caregivers by addressing physical, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects. The study follows a 42-year-old male patient with lung adenocarcinoma and explores the impact of palliative care on his symptoms and overall well-being.

The patient received specific tumor treatment in three lines, but eventually, the best supportive care (BSC) was necessary due to the patient's condition. Palliative Medicine Specialist (PLM) was introduced to the patient in October 2019, and specialized consultations were conducted whenever needed. The patient experienced persistent chest pain throughout his illness trajectory, and his psychological well-being fluctuated between pessimism, depression, and non-acceptance. Social isolation was also observed, impacting his psychological state.

During the course of the illness, a total of 83 visits were made, with 21 specialized PLM consultations. Pain therapy was tailored to the patient's needs, and other symptoms such as nausea, hiccups, cachexia, and constipation were treated appropriately. Despite the challenges, the patient was able to return to work and enjoy time with family and friends. Spiritual needs were addressed, and the patient sought guidance from a spiritual guide. Overall, the patient reported moderate symptom burdens on the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS).

The study concludes that a holistic approach, considering the physical, social, spiritual, and psychological aspects of patients' lives, leads to improvements in their overall well-being. It emphasizes the importance of integrating palliative care early in the disease course and implementing closer follow-up of patients' needs, potentially using mobile apps and remote access to physicians. By doing so, better burden control and improved patient outcomes can be achieved in the management of lung cancer.
