Pdf Summary
Patients with advanced lung cancer often experience higher rates of hospitalization compared to other types of cancer. Hospital admission among cancer patients typically indicates organ fragility and is often associated with a poor prognosis. This retrospective study examined 646 unscheduled hospitalizations that took place at a university hospital in Madrid, Spain over a 12-month period, focusing on patients with lung cancer.

Of the 646 hospitalizations, 158 (24.5%) were for patients with lung cancer. The median length of stay was 8 days, and the rate of readmission or new emergency department visits was 60%, with a median time since discharge of 33 days. Overall survival since diagnosis was 16.5 months, while survival since admission was 3.3 months. There were significant differences in survival since admission between patients admitted due to tumor-related causes and other causes. There were no significant differences in survival since admission based on stage or the number of lines of systemic treatment.

During hospitalization or follow-up, 121 patients (76.5%) died. Some patients required palliative care and palliative sedation for refractory symptoms such as dyspnea, delirium, pain, and vital distress.

Patients with lung cancer require the highest number of hospital admissions compared to other cancers. The need for admission is a concerning sign of poor prognosis, with a higher incidence of unscheduled return visits, limited post-admission survival, and a significant chance of dying during hospitalization. Coordinating with palliative care services is crucial to provide optimal care and support for these patients.
