Pdf Summary
The Global Lung Cancer Patient Council (GLCPC) and Roche have collaborated to create resources to support people with lung cancer, their families, and healthcare providers (HCPs) in addressing mental health issues. Lung cancer not only has physical health consequences but also negatively affects an individual's mental well-being. The late diagnosis and social stigma associated with lung cancer, even in non-smokers, contribute to higher psychological distress compared to other types of cancer. However, there is a lack of resources to manage mental health issues related to lung cancer. Recognizing this need, the GLCPC and Roche developed materials to educate and support patients and HCPs in managing mental health challenges.

The development process involved input from patient advocates, patients, and caregivers from around the world through the GLCPC advisory board. Three members from Australia, the UK, and Israel oversaw the project, and feedback was gathered from experts in the field. The final versions of the resources include a patient resource with chapters on accessing additional support, self-care strategies, coping mechanisms, and a glossary of lung cancer terms. The HCP resource includes chapters on having mental health conversations with patients, addressing psychological distress, the importance of mental health expertise in the multidisciplinary team, and a glossary of mental health-related terms.

Both resources were released under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International license, allowing free access, distribution, and transformation of the materials with proper acknowledgment. The GLCPC and Roche hope that these resources will meet the unmet need for mental health support in lung cancer care. Research will be conducted to assess the impact of these materials in real-world settings. By addressing the mental health care needs of lung cancer patients, their families, and HCPs, the GLCPC and Roche aim to improve the overall well-being of individuals affected by this disease.
