Pdf Summary
The study aims to establish clinical quality indicators (CQIs) for lung and thoracic cancers in Australia and New Zealand. The researchers conducted a Delphi consensus project, seeking participation from clinicians, researchers, patient advocates, and stakeholders. They conducted three rounds of surveys to rate and discuss indicators related to clinical documentation, referral, diagnosis, staging, management, and mortality. The final round involved a hybrid in-person and virtual discussion meeting. Consensus was set at 70%, and a total of 28 CQIs reached consensus, covering various aspects of lung cancer care. The indicators included those relevant to all thoracic malignancies, lung cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, small cell lung cancer, and mesothelioma.

The study received expressions of interest from 108 individuals, and 79 individuals completed the first round of surveys. Participant demographics showed that a significant number of medical practitioners and patient advocates were involved. In subsequent rounds, the number of participants decreased. The results of the study provide a set of CQIs that can be used to evaluate the quality of thoracic oncology care in Australia and New Zealand. These indicators will be implemented as part of the Lung Cancer Clinical Quality Data Platform project.

Overall, the study highlights the need for quality improvement initiatives in lung cancer care in Australasia. By establishing CQIs, healthcare providers can monitor and address unwarranted variations in practice, disparities, and inequities. The findings of this study contribute to the ongoing efforts to improve the quality of care for patients with lung and thoracic cancers in the region.
