The Lung Cancer Clinical Quality Data Platform (LUCAP) was implemented as a pilot project in Western Australia to address inequities and variations in lung cancer care and outcomes. Researchers collected data from inpatients and outpatients with suspected or newly diagnosed lung and thoracic cancers. The dataset included demographics, diagnostic results, treatment, and mortality, and was benchmarked against optimal care timeframes. 208 participants were recruited, with 205 eligible participants remaining. The median age was 73 years, and 44% were female. At censor date, 154 thoracic malignancies were diagnosed, including small cell lung cancer (4%), non-small cell lung cancer (90%), mesothelioma (3%), and carcinoid (3%). The study revealed delays in diagnosis and treatment, as well as incomplete documentation of performance status and staging data. Only 17% of participants diagnosed with lung cancer started treatment within 6 weeks of referral. Of the participants diagnosed with stage IV non-small cell lung cancer, 91% received biomarker testing, but only 61% had complete results. During the study period, 71% of participants commenced anti-cancer treatment with a median time from diagnosis to treatment of 31 days. At censor date, 8% of participants with lung cancer had died, with 33% of those receiving treatment in the preceding 30 days. The LUCAP data platform successfully collected prospective lung cancer data but identified evidence-practice gaps in diagnosis and treatment delays, as well as incomplete data documentation. The platform will be further evaluated as it expands to additional Australian states in 2023.
