Pdf Summary
This study aimed to examine the role of health insurance in patients diagnosed with advanced lung cancer in Japan. The researchers conducted a survey at 16 hospitals between 2014 and 2016 and collected data on patients' health insurance, clinical and sociodemographic characteristics, and self-reported outcomes after diagnosis.

Of the 147 patients included in the study, 77.6% had private health insurance. The patients with private health insurance were found to be significantly younger and had better performance status. They also showed better quality of life, specifically in social and emotional well-being, at three months after diagnosis.

However, the study did not find any significant associations between having private health insurance and treatment details, medical satisfaction, or the degree of financial problems. Interestingly, a small proportion of patients reported that private health insurance was not necessary, especially those without it.

Overall, the findings suggest that having private health insurance may be associated with better quality of life after a diagnosis of advanced lung cancer in Japan. The study highlights the supplementary role of private health insurance in medical care for these patients. However, it is important to note that most patients still believe in the necessity of private health insurance.

This study contributes to the understanding of the impact of health insurance on the well-being of patients with advanced lung cancer in Japan. It emphasizes the importance of considering health insurance coverage and its potential effect on patient outcomes and financial burdens in cancer care.
