The author reviewed the 2021 lung cancer data for Wales to assess the number of patients presenting as an emergency and how it affected their treatment outcomes.<br /><br />The study found that 605 patients were diagnosed with lung cancer in Wales following an emergency admission in 2021, accounting for 25% of all cases. In five out of the six health boards, more than a quarter of lung cancer patients presented as an emergency.<br /><br />There was a significant difference in treatment intent depending on the method of referral. Only 10% of those who presented as an emergency received treatment with curative intent, compared to 28% of non-emergency presenters. Patients who presented as an emergency also experienced longer delays to commence curative treatment, with an average of 88 days compared to 101 days for non-emergency presenters.<br /><br />However, patients who presented as an emergency started curative treatment nearly two weeks earlier than those referred through the outpatient setting. This could be attributed to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on outpatient pathways and the availability of inpatient beds for investigations.<br /><br />The findings highlight that patients presenting as an emergency admission are less likely to receive curative treatment for their lung cancer. Delays within the pathway need to be addressed to ensure timely treatment and improve patient outcomes in Wales.
