Pdf Summary
A study conducted in Malaysia examined the content of e-cigarette retailer websites and the experiences of e-cigarette users. The researchers analyzed the content on 30 retailer websites to identify marketing claims, promotional strategies, and product details of e-cigarettes. They found that the websites contained positively framed marketing claims, captions, and slogans about e-cigarettes, as well as social media links and contact information to promote sales. However, age verifications, disclaimers about the addictive nature of nicotine, and health warnings were absent.

In addition, a survey was conducted with 302 e-cigarette users recruited online. The survey collected data on sociodemographics, tobacco use, and experiences with e-cigarettes. The findings showed that about 47% of respondents were exclusive e-cigarette users, 28% were dual users of both electronic and conventional cigarettes, and 25% were past cigarette smokers.

The main reasons for using e-cigarettes among respondents were the perception that they are less harmful than cigarettes, avoiding cigarettes, and quitting smoking. The survey also found that exclusive e-cigarette users reported significantly lower levels of nicotine addiction and side effects compared to dual users and past smokers.

The study concluded that there is a need for surveillance and regulation of e-cigarette marketing and sales in Malaysia to prevent youth access and initiation. The researchers recommend placing disclaimers on e-cigarette products to inform consumers about the addictive nature of nicotine and the potential side effects. Overall, the study provides insights into the content of e-cigarette retailer websites and the experiences of e-cigarette users in Malaysia.
