This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the risk of small cell lung cancer (SCLC) among workers exposed to asbestos. The researchers searched for studies that reported occupational exposure to asbestos and SCLC-related deaths or incidence. Seven case-control studies were identified, including 3,231 SCLC cases and 23,876 controls. Five studies focused on men, one on women, and one study provided results by sex and tobacco use. Six studies assessing the risk of SCLC in men were included in the meta-analysis. <br /><br />The results showed a significantly increased risk of SCLC among men with occupational exposure to asbestos, with a pooled odds ratio of 1.89 and a 95% confidence interval of 1.25-2.86. Moderate heterogeneity was observed among the studies. Sensitivity analysis did not significantly change the results. The overall quality of the evidence was rated as very low according to the GRADE system.<br /><br />The findings of this study indicate that occupational exposure to asbestos significantly increases the risk of SCLC among men. It highlights the continued potential risk that asbestos poses to workers, and suggests that there may be a future peak in cancer cases due to asbestos exposure. This study adds to the limited literature on the specific effects of asbestos on SCLC, a type of lung cancer. Further research and interventions may be needed to mitigate the risk of asbestos-related diseases in occupational settings.
