Pdf Summary
This study explored the clinical and genetic characteristics of younger (<50 years old) lung cancer patients compared to older (≥50 years old) patients in Spain. The data was obtained from the Thoracic Tumor Registry of the Spanish Lung Cancer Group. The study included 26,370 lung cancer cases, with 1,202 cases in the younger group.

The findings revealed several differences between the two age groups. The proportion of women and never smokers was higher in the younger group compared to the older group. Younger patients were also more likely to have no comorbidities and a lower smoking intensity in pack-years. In terms of genetic characteristics, the younger patients had a higher proportion of EGFR, ALK, and RET mutations.

Multivariate analysis showed that younger lung cancer cases were more likely to be female, have advanced stage cancer, have no comorbidities, have symptoms at diagnosis, and have ALK mutations. Among the subgroup of patients under 35 years old, there was an even higher proportion of females, never smokers, and patients without comorbidities. These patients also had a higher prevalence of mutations in ALK and ROS1.

The study highlights the importance of considering age-related differences in lung cancer. These differences have implications for diagnosis and clinical management, particularly with the emergence of new targeted therapies. Understanding these characteristics can help tailor treatment strategies for different age groups of lung cancer patients.

Keywords: young lung cancer, characteristics, genotype.
