Pdf Summary
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide, with the highest incidence seen in patients older than 65 years. However, it also affects younger patients. This study aimed to analyze the clinical and genetic characteristics of young lung cancer patients in Spain and compare them with older patients. The study included 26,370 lung cancer cases, with 1,202 patients aged 50 and below.

The results showed several differences between the two age groups. Younger patients were more likely to be female, never smokers, and have no comorbidities compared to older patients. They also had a higher proportion of mutations in ALK and ROS1 genes.

In terms of clinical characteristics, younger patients were more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage (III or IV) compared to older patients. However, they had a lower prevalence of small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) and a higher prevalence of non-smoking-related lung cancer.

The presence of symptoms at diagnosis was also different between the two age groups, with a higher proportion of younger patients presenting with symptoms.

These findings suggest that there are important differences in the clinical and genetic characteristics of lung cancer depending on the age at diagnosis. These differences may have implications for the diagnosis and management of the disease, especially with the development of new targeted therapies that may be more effective for certain genetic mutations.
