Pdf Summary
A study conducted at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University in China aimed to investigate the impact of diabetes on the prognosis of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The study included a total of 8,549 patients who underwent R0 lung tumor resection between 2007 and 2017. The analysis focused on the diabetes conditions of the patients, their usage of antidiabetic drugs, and relevant clinical data.

The results showed that out of the total patients, 749 had diabetes and 642 of them were taking oral antidiabetic medication or receiving insulin injections. The overall survival analysis revealed that diabetics had lower survival rates compared to non-diabetics. The survival disparity was more pronounced in diabetics taking antidiabetic medication.

Further analysis based on subgroups showed that the survival disparity remained significant in the female subgroup and the lung adenocarcinoma subgroup, but not in the male or lung squamous cell carcinoma subgroups.

However, the application of adjuvant chemotherapy was found to significantly improve the prognosis of patients, regardless of their diabetes conditions, and eliminate the survival disparity between diabetics taking medication and other patients.

The study concluded that diabetes and the usage of antidiabetic drugs have a profound impact on the prognosis of NSCLC patients. Additionally, the application of adjuvant chemotherapy showed promising efficacy in improving the outcomes for diabetics and mitigating the prognosis impact of diabetes.

These findings have important implications for the monitoring and treatment of diabetics with NSCLC, highlighting the need for close attention to diabetes management and the potential benefits of adjuvant chemotherapy in this patient population.
