Pdf Summary
A recent study conducted in China investigated the impact of diabetes on the prognosis of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who underwent surgery. The researchers retrospectively analyzed data from 8,549 patients who had R0 lung tumor resection at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University between 2007 and 2017. The patients' diabetes status, use of antidiabetic drugs, and clinical data were collected and analyzed.

Among the patients, 749 had diabetes, and out of those, 642 were taking oral antidiabetic medication or insulin injections. The overall survival analysis showed that patients with diabetes had a worse prognosis compared to those without diabetes. This survival disparity was even more pronounced in patients with diabetes who were taking antidiabetic medication.

The study found that the survival disparity remained significant in female patients and those with lung adenocarcinoma. However, the use of adjuvant chemotherapy improved the prognosis for all patients, regardless of their diabetes status, and eliminated the survival disparity between patients with diabetes who were taking antidiabetic medication and those who were not.

The findings of this study suggest that diabetes not only affects the prognosis of patients with NSCLC but also the use of antidiabetic drugs can further worsen the survival outcomes. However, the application of adjuvant chemotherapy has a significant positive impact on patient prognosis, effectively offsetting the negative effects of diabetes.

These findings have important implications for monitoring and treating patients with diabetes and NSCLC. It highlights the need for close monitoring of diabetes and the potential benefits of adjuvant chemotherapy in improving survival outcomes for these patients.
