Pdf Summary
A recent study conducted in the UK using data from the UK Biobank has found a significant association between peptic ulcer (PU) and an increased risk of lung cancer in smokers. The study followed 142,454 participants for an average of 13.7 years and identified 223 cases of incident lung cancer in patients with PU, compared to 2,902 cases in reference individuals. The risk of lung cancer was found to be 1.29 times higher in patients with PU compared to those without. The risk was also higher in patients with active PU compared to non-active PU. Both gastric ulcer (GU) and duodenal ulcer (DU) were associated with a higher risk of lung cancer. The risk of lung cancer peaked when the PU was diagnosed 5 to 15 years ago. The association between PU and lung cancer was found to be stronger in former smokers compared to current smokers. The study suggests that in clinical screening for lung cancer, more attention should be paid to patients with active and/or long-standing peptic ulcers to enable early detection of lung cancer. The study also highlights the importance of considering extra-pulmonary factors in future research on lung cancer risk assessment. Overall, this study provides evidence of a link between poor bowel health indicated by peptic ulcers and an increased risk of lung cancer in smokers.
