Pdf Summary
This study aimed to explore the experiences and psychological responses of patients who have been diagnosed with pulmonary nodules through lung cancer screening. The study found that patients' psychological responses varied, with factors such as trust in healthcare professionals and reassurance from repeat scans playing a role. Participants also highlighted the importance of effective communication with healthcare professionals, with verbal communication being viewed as more informative and reassuring than written communication. Participants suggested that more specific information about the meaning of being under surveillance could minimize distress and anxiety and improve their understanding of the risks and benefits. The study concluded that perceived support from healthcare professionals and effective information exchange were crucial to patients' experiences and psychological responses. While letter-based approaches for disclosing nodule results were generally acceptable, improvements in how nodules are explained in the letter were needed. Verbal communication with clinicians was seen as a way to decrease uncertainty and provide additional support for patients experiencing distress. Overall, the study highlights the importance of personalized and informative communication in the management of patients with screening-detected pulmonary nodules.
