This study aimed to explore the experiences and psychological reactions of patients with screening-detected pulmonary nodules who are under surveillance. The study involved 39 patients in England who had undergone their first surveillance scan. Patients reported satisfaction and trust in clinicians who kept a close eye on their nodules.<br /><br />One issue that emerged was a lack of knowledge about what a nodule is and its potential implications. There was concern among patients that the nodules could be indicative of lung cancer. Personal or family respiratory history and risk behaviors also contributed to the patients' uncertainty and worry. Patients expressed a desire for more support and clearer explanations regarding the nodules, which could help reduce anxiety and uncertainty. <br /><br />In conclusion, patients with screening-detected pulmonary nodules experience anxiety and worry during surveillance. The study suggests that improved communication practices, such as providing verbal information and clearer explanations, may help alleviate patient concerns and improve adherence to repeat scans. The findings highlight the need for support and education for patients undergoing surveillance for pulmonary nodules.
