Pdf Summary
This study aimed to assess the awareness and understanding of breast density among women enrolled in the low-dose CT lung cancer screening program and identify any follow-up screening that was conducted. The study included English-speaking women who received low-dose CT through the International Early Lung Cancer Action Program (I-ELCAP) at the Mount Sinai Health System from September 2016 to December 2022 and were found to have dense breasts on CT. Of the 165 participants contacted, 88 completed the questionnaire. Among them, 89% were aware of their dense breasts, with the majority being informed by a physician. However, only 36% of participants received supplemental imaging, with 64% not undergoing any additional testing. The density results on the CT and mammogram were concordant in 87% of cases, but 13% had discordant results. The study suggests that reporting breast density on low-dose CT scans could help reinforce the option and potential benefits of supplemental breast cancer screening for women with dense breasts. It could also inform those who were previously unaware of their breast density and help determine whether additional imaging is necessary when there are discrepancies between CT and mammography findings.
