Pdf Summary
This presentation at the World Conference on Lung Cancer 2023 discusses the differences between patients with incidentally detected and screening detected early stage (IA/IB) lung cancer. The researchers conducted a retrospective analysis of thoracic surgery patients at Mount Sinai Hospital who had a diagnosis of stage I lung cancer. They compared patients with incidental findings of lung nodules to those detected through screening.

The study included 397 patients, of which 155 had incidentally detected nodules and 66 had screening detected nodules. The analysis of the data showed that patients with incidentally detected nodules were older, more likely to have quit smoking, and had a higher number of comorbidities. However, there were no significant differences between the groups in terms of smoking history, tumor characteristics, surgical approach, or post-operative events.

The findings suggest that incidental findings should be considered as a valid and important diagnostic tool, similar to traditional low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening. The researchers conclude that patients undergoing imaging for other reasons should be routinely evaluated for lung nodules.

In summary, this study compares patients with incidentally detected and screening detected early stage lung cancer and finds that they are similar in terms of tumor characteristics, surgical approach, and post-operative events. The research highlights the importance of evaluating incidental findings and suggests that they should be considered as important as traditional LDCT screening in detecting lung nodules.
