Pdf Summary
This document provides an overview of a pilot project conducted in Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Phong, Vietnam, to detect lung cancer using computer-aided detection (CAD) software. The goal of the project was to identify individuals who were initially screened for tuberculosis (TB) using chest X-ray (CXR) and further screen them for lung cancer using computerized tomography (CT).

Between October 2022 and February 2023, a total of 37,255 individuals who were initially assessed for TB had their CXR processed by the qXR CAD software. Out of these, 254 people (0.7%) were found to have potentially malignant lung nodules. 56.7% of these individuals were contacted and agreed to be referred for a CT scan.

A total of 123 (85.4%) CT scans were performed, and 35 (28.5%) participants were found to have nodules with a Lung-RADS score of 4, indicating a higher likelihood of malignancy. This pilot project successfully established a model for early lung cancer detection through CAD-assisted CT referrals.

The project highlights the importance of lung cancer screening, as it is the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality in Vietnam. The incidence of lung cancer is expected to increase as the population grows and ages. Therefore, early detection and intervention are crucial in reducing mortality rates.

The document also emphasizes the need for further research to understand the reasons for refusal in order to tailor outreach messages and enabler packages to improve participation rates. It suggests assessing the CAD software score threshold for potentially malignant nodules on CXR to optimize yields among those referred for a CT scan.

Overall, this pilot project demonstrates the potential of using CAD software in combination with CXR and CT scans for early lung cancer detection and highlights areas for further improvement and research. The project was supported by Qure.ai, with funds from AstraZeneca.
