Pdf Summary
This report provides an overview of the status, challenges, and future perspectives of lung cancer screening (LCS) using low dose computed tomography (LDCT) in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). The report was based on responses obtained from 16 countries, 10 of which were LMIC. The main obstacles to LCS in LMIC include the availability of health care resources, general acceptance, financial burden on patients, lack of standard applicable inclusion criteria, high burden of other pulmonary diseases, lack of governmental interest/organization guidance, and low recall/follow up rate. The report also highlights the importance of collecting detailed information on lung cancer incidence and mortality by stage at diagnosis, as well as considering country-specific risk factors and implementation challenges. The International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) Early Detection & Screening Committee Diagnostics Working Group (DWG) aims to address these issues and provide guidance, recommendations, and implementation strategies for LCS in LMIC. Overall, this report emphasizes the need for a systematic evaluation of the current status of LCS in LMIC and the importance of addressing the specific challenges faced by these countries in order to improve early detection and screening efforts.
