Pdf Summary
This report discusses the challenges and perspectives of lung cancer screening (LCS) using low dose computed tomography (LDCT) in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). The goal of the report is to explore the obstacles faced by LMICs in implementing LCS and to provide future guidance and recommendations for these countries.

The report is based on a questionnaire distributed during the World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC2022) and the Latin America Lung Cancer Conference (LALCA2023). The questionnaire collected responses from participants in 16 countries, 10 of which were LMICs.

The findings reveal that the main challenges reported by LMICs in implementing LCS include the availability of healthcare resources, general acceptance, financial burden on patients, lack of standard applicable inclusion criteria, high burden of other pulmonary diseases, lack of governmental interest/organization guidance, and low recall/follow up rate.

The report also highlights the risk factors for lung cancer reported by the participants, including smoking, air pollution, and asbestos. It mentions that active smoking burden ranged from 10-80% in the countries surveyed, and smoking cessation programs were mostly reported as partially available.

The availability of CT scanners capable of performing good quality LDCT was also discussed, with most responses being descriptive and not allowing for systematic evaluation.

In conclusion, the report emphasizes the need for a systematic evaluation of LCS in LMICs, taking into account the specific challenges and risks in each country. The IASLC Early Detection & Screening Committee Diagnostics Working Group plans to focus on these issues and provide future guidance and implementation strategies.

Overall, this report provides valuable insights into the status and challenges of LCS in LMICs and offers recommendations for improving the implementation of screening programs in these countries.
