Pdf Summary
Only 5% of eligible individuals in the United States have undergone lung cancer screening. In order to understand the barriers to completing low dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans for lung cancer screening, a study was conducted at a tertiary-care, academic hospital. The study involved a cross-sectional analysis of patients who had completed LDCT scans versus those who had not. Phone surveys were also conducted with patients who had not completed LDCT scans to assess their knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions towards lung cancer screening.

The results of the study showed that there are barriers to completing LDCT scans, even when patients are correctly identified as eligible and have gone through a shared decision-making visit. The loss of patients after LDCT scans are ordered by providers is partly due to misconceptions that lead to patient disinterest and loss of follow-up.

This study is the first to examine the gap between ordering and completing LDCT scans in the lung cancer screening workflow. The authors suggest that larger studies are necessary to identify actionable interventions that can increase the uptake of lung cancer screening on a national level.

The phone survey results of patients who did not complete LDCT scans showed that only 39% of patients were aware of the way to screen for lung cancer. However, 89% of patients knew the benefits and risks of getting a LDCT scan. Only 11% of patients believed they were at high risk for developing lung cancer. When asked about rescheduling their CT scans, 11% of patients expressed interest in doing so. Reasons for not completing the screening CT included forgetting, not believing they were at risk for lung cancer, and having already been screened before.

In conclusion, there are barriers to completing LDCT scans for lung cancer screening, and further research is needed to identify interventions to increase screening uptake.
