Pdf Summary
CALM (Coordinating A Lung Screening with Mammography) is a study conducted to increase the uptake of lung cancer screening among eligible women undergoing breast cancer screening. Despite the scientific evidence and guidelines supporting the benefit of low dose chest CT screening for lung cancer, the uptake remains low in the U.S. This study aims to identify lung cancer screening eligible women through screening mammography programs as a strategy to increase screening among individuals already demonstrating screening behaviors. The intervention also has the potential to create awareness among men.

The study involved mammogram participants at Vanderbilt Medical Center and Mount Auburn Hospital from November 2019 to December 2022. The electronic medical records were used to identify potentially eligible women, and outreach was conducted to confirm eligibility and offer lung cancer screening.

Key results of the study include: 4.9% of mammography recipients were eligible for lung cancer screening, and 69% of them had never undergone lung cancer screening before. There was a significant increase in lung cancer screening exams among women during the intervention period at both institutions. However, there was no corresponding significant change in baseline screening exams among men over the same time.

The study findings suggest that integrating lung cancer screening with mammography programs can be an effective strategy to increase screening rates among eligible women. The study highlights the importance of increasing awareness and access to lung cancer screening, especially among high-risk individuals.

In conclusion, CALM is a study aimed at increasing the uptake of lung cancer screening among eligible women undergoing breast cancer screening. The study demonstrates that integrating lung cancer screening with mammography programs can lead to increased screening rates. This approach has the potential to not only increase screening among women but also create awareness among men.
