Pdf Summary
This study aimed to investigate the expression of PD-1 (programmed cell death protein 1) and IL-10R (interleukin-10 receptor) on T lymphocytes in pleural effusions in malignant and benign diseases. Pleural effusion is the accumulation of fluid in the pleural space, typically indicating underlying diseases such as cancer. The study included 51 patients with pleural effusions, divided into three groups: cytologically confirmed malignancy, benign effusion in patients with malignant disease, and benign effusion in benign disease. T lymphocytes from the samples were analyzed for the expression of PD-1 and IL-10R using flow cytometry.

The results showed that in cytologically confirmed malignant pleural effusions, there was a significantly lower expression of PD-1IL-10-RCD8 and a significantly higher expression of PD-1-IL-10-R-CD8 T lymphocytes compared to benign pleural effusions. This suggests that there is a development of an immune-privileged microenvironment in tumor progression, indicating the immunosuppressive function of PD-1 and IL-10R in malignant diseases.

However, there were no significant differences in the expression of PD-1 and IL-10R between benign effusions in patients with malignant disease and benign effusions in benign disease. This implies that the expression of these biomarkers may not be specific to the underlying disease but rather related to the malignant nature of the pleural effusion itself.

In conclusion, this study provides evidence that the frequency of CD8 T cells expressing PD-1 and IL-10R is significantly lower in malignant pleural effusions compared to benign effusions, regardless of the underlying disease. These findings contribute to the understanding of the immune evasion mechanisms in tumor progression and may have implications for the development of immunotherapeutic strategies targeting PD-1 and IL-10R in the treatment of malignant pleural effusions.
