Pdf Summary
This study examines the clinical characteristics and biomarkers of lung cancer (LC) cases diagnosed through a low-dose CT (LDCT) screening program compared to cases diagnosed outside of the screening program. The study included a retrospective review of new LC cases at an academic hospital in Chicago from 2022. The variables analyzed included demographics, smoking history, mode of LC diagnosis, stage and histology of LC, and biomarkers routinely used in LC care. The biomarkers were stratified based on FDA-approved treatments for mutations in the first and second-line treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

The results showed that among the 138 LC cases included in the study, 24% were diagnosed through LDCT screening. The cases diagnosed through LDCT were more likely to be at earlier stages, have a current smoking history, and have adenocarcinoma histology. However, there was no statistically significant difference in biomarkers between the two cohorts, including actionable mutations, PDL1, and tumor mutational burden (TMB).

These findings highlight the importance of early detection through LDCT screening programs in identifying LC cases at earlier stages and with adenocarcinoma histology. However, the study also suggests the need for larger studies to validate if biomarkers are similar between cases diagnosed through LDCT screening and those diagnosed outside of the screening program. Overall, this research contributes to understanding the clinical characteristics and biomarkers of lung cancer in screened and non-screened cohorts.
