Pdf Summary
This study aimed to compare the clinical characteristics and biomarkers of lung cancer cases detected through lung cancer screening (LDCT) versus those detected outside of screening. The researchers conducted a retrospective review of new lung cancer cases at UI Health from 2022. The variables analyzed included demographics, smoking history, mode of diagnosis, cancer stage and histology, and biomarkers commonly used in lung cancer care.

The results showed that cases diagnosed through LDCT were more likely to be at earlier stages, have adenocarcinoma histology, and have a current smoking history. However, there was no statistically significant difference in biomarkers between the two cohorts, including actionable mutations in the first and second-line treatments for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), PDL1, and tumor mutational burden (TMB).

These findings highlight the importance of early detection through lung cancer screening programs, as cases detected through LDCT tended to be at earlier stages. However, the study also suggests that there is no significant difference in lung cancer-specific biomarkers between cases detected through screening and those detected outside of screening. This suggests the need for larger studies to further validate these findings and determine if biomarkers are similar between the two populations.

In conclusion, this study found that lung cancer cases detected through LDCT were more likely to be at earlier stages and have adenocarcinoma histology and a current smoking history. However, there was no significant difference in lung cancer-specific biomarkers between cases detected through screening and those detected outside of screening. Larger studies are needed to confirm these findings and explore the relationship between screening and biomarkers in lung cancer.
