Pdf Summary
The study presented in this abstract focuses on the evaluation of patient-reported outcomes (PRO) and exercise capacity in patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (ES-NSCLC) undergoing radiotherapy. The researchers conducted a longitudinal study on 51 patients who received stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). Data was collected at baseline, 3 months, and 12 months post-treatment.

Clinicians evaluated symptoms and toxicities using the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE), while patients used the PRO-CTCAE to report their symptoms and toxicities. The study collected data on fatigue, cough, dyspnea, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), daily physical functioning, and functional exercise capacity.

The results showed that at baseline, clinicians and patients reported various symptoms of fatigue, cough, and dyspnea. Over time, dyspnea increased while other patient-reported toxicities remained stable. Clinically meaningful improvements were seen in fatigue and cough. Overall HRQoL, physical functioning, and emotional functioning improved over time.

Baseline data on survival showed that patients with better overall HRQoL, physical functioning, daily functioning, and exercise capacity had better 1-year survival. However, no statistically significant differences were found in daily functioning and exercise capacity over time.

The study concludes that SBRT in ES-NSCLC can alleviate some pre-existing symptoms, improve HRQoL and certain functional domains, while inducing toxicities. Clinicians reported fewer symptoms and toxicities compared to patients. The study also emphasizes the importance of understanding the impact of treatment on PRO to identify patient needs and improve their HRQoL.

Overall, this study provides insights into the effects of radiotherapy on patient-reported outcomes and exercise capacity in ES-NSCLC patients, highlighting the need for personalized approaches to enhance quality of life.
