Pdf Summary
This study aimed to report the incidence of thymomatous Myasthenia Gravis (MG) and the histopathological characteristics of thymoma in patients with thymomatous MG compared to those without MG. The researchers conducted a retrospective review of thymectomy cases performed at a tertiary-care center from 2001-2021, and collected MG medical management data and follow-up from the Neurology Department electronic medical record system.

Out of 422 thymectomies, 160 cases (37.9%) involved MG, with 78 (49%) being thymomatous MG. Thymomatous MG was associated with a younger mean age and a trend for smaller tumor size. Germinal hyperplasia and thymoma were more often found in MG cases, as well as WHO B2 histopathology. WHO AB thymoma, thymic cysts, and carcinoma were less likely to be seen with MG.

There was no difference in complete MG remission rates between thymomatous and non-thymomatous MG. The researchers concluded that WHO B2 thymoma, germinal cell hyperplasia, and cystic lesions were more likely to be associated with MG. They also suggested that future research should focus on the role of T-lymphocyte immune response in the pathophysiology of thymomatous MG.

The findings from this study contribute to the understanding of the characteristics of thymomatous MG and provide insights into the histopathological differences between MG and non-MG cases. The results also highlight the importance of thymectomy in the management of MG. Further research in this area could help to improve clinical outcomes and guide personalized treatment strategies for patients with thymomatous MG.
