Pdf Summary
This study investigates the role of novel microRNAs in pleural mesothelioma (PM) and their association with response to chemotherapy and overall survival. The researchers collected tissue samples from 51 PM patients, 16 non-PM pleural biopsies, and 14 lung cancer cases. Using PCR primers and the RT-qPCR method, they measured the expression of three novel microRNAs (mpm-miR-18, mpm-miR-58, and mpm-miR-72) in these samples.

The results show that all three novel microRNAs have significantly higher expression in PM compared to non-PM and lung cancer cases. Specifically in the non-PM samples, all three microRNAs are significantly higher in PM compared to benign non-PM samples. Additionally, mpm-miR-72 and mpm-miR-58 are significantly higher in PM compared to pleural metastases. While the expression of these microRNAs does not change following chemotherapy, their levels show trends towards being higher in non-responders with progressive disease.

Interestingly, none of the microRNAs are associated with the overall survival of PM patients, except for mpm-miR-18 in epithelioid cases. The researchers emphasize the need for further analysis of these novel microRNAs in larger patient cohorts.

The study was funded by the Stiftung für Angewandte Krebsforschung (SAKF). The patient characteristics of the study cohort include a median age of 64 for PM patients, 69.5 for non-PM patients, and 70 for lung cancer patients. The majority of patients are male, with the histology of PM cases mainly being epithelioid. The non-PM cases consist of benign inflammatory reactions and pleural metastasis, while the lung cancer cases are primarily adenocarcinoma. Overall survival data for non-PM patients was not recorded, but the majority of lung cancer patients were alive at the time of analysis.
