Pdf Summary
This study aimed to evaluate the long-term survival and prognosis of patients with primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) of the thorax. The study included 38 patients who underwent surgery for PNET between 1998 and 2018. Patient characteristics, surgical procedures, and treatment received were recorded. The mean follow-up was 49 months.

The results showed that complete surgical resection and adjuvant therapy after neoadjuvant chemo/radiotherapy can effectively manage thoracic PNET. The size of the tumor was found to be a significant factor in survival, with patients with tumors smaller than 8 cm having significantly higher survival rates. Screening and early diagnosis were emphasized as important for improving outcomes. Neoadjuvant treatment also contributed to better outcomes and the achievement of complete surgical resections.

The overall 5-year survival rate was 54.5%, with a median overall survival of 83 months. Disease-free survival was significantly better in patients with smaller tumors compared to those with larger tumors. Multivariate analysis showed that larger tumor size was independently associated with poor prognosis.

The study concluded that neoadjuvant treatment and smaller tumor size were associated with better survival and disease-free survival outcomes. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and identify other prognostic factors for this aggressive cancer.

In summary, this study highlights the importance of early diagnosis, neoadjuvant treatment, and complete surgical resection for improving long-term survival in patients with thoracic PNET. The size of the tumor was found to be a significant factor in prognosis, with smaller tumors associated with better outcomes.
