Pdf Summary
The CANOPUS study in Japan aimed to determine the proportion of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) deterioration in older patients undergoing surgery for lung cancer. The study included over 870 patients and assessed their IADL scores at 6, 12, and 24 months after surgery. The results showed that while there was no further deterioration of IADLs after 6 months, there was no significant recovery in patients whose IADLs had deteriorated at 6 months. The study also found that patients who did not have cancer recurrence and complications were able to maintain their IADLs in the long term. The impact of different surgical procedures on IADL preservation was also examined, with wedge resection showing short-term preservation but long-term deterioration, possibly due to vulnerability and cancer recurrence. On the other hand, segmentectomy resulted in initially more deteriorated IADLs but better long-term preservation with less influence from cancer recurrence. The study emphasizes the importance of monitoring and preserving IADLs in lung cancer patients after surgery. It suggests that patients without cancer recurrence or complications have better long-term preservation, and the choice of surgical procedure can impact IADL preservation, with segmentectomy showing better short-term results compared to wedge resection. The study acknowledges the participation of patients and investigators from the Japan Clinical Oncology Group and the support received from the National Cancer Center Research and Development Funds and the Research Fund of the National Federation of Health Insurance Societies.
