A study conducted at the City of Hope Cancer Center enrolled patients and their family caregivers (FCGs) in a trial to assess the effectiveness of a self-management intervention for improving quality of life (QOL) after lung cancer surgery. The study included 190 dyads, with 164 completing a baseline geriatric assessment (GA) before surgery. The FCGs tended to be younger than the patients, with a median age of 63 compared to 68, respectively. Women made up the majority of both patients and FCGs. FCGs generally had better physical and mental health scores than patients, but reported less social support. The GA measures used included assessments of functional status, physical health, social activity limitations, social support, performance rating, mobility, falls, cognitive impairment, and unintentional weight loss. The baseline demographic data showed that the majority of patients were in stage I of the cancer, and FCGs were most commonly spouses/partners of the patients. The study concluded that FCGs, although younger and generally healthier than patients, still experienced geriatric deficits, particularly in social aspects. The use of GAs for lung cancer FCGs may help identify their unique needs and concerns related to caregiving. The ongoing study plans to correlate GA with FCG QOL outcomes.
